Conditions for Letting of Property in Malta
Maltese Nationals
In order to rent out property in Malta all property owners must obtain a letting licence from the Ministry of Tourism. Properties may be rented out either under a long let or holiday licence. Property owners would also have to register with the VAT and Income Tax Department.
Non-Maltese Permanent Residents
Non-Maltese citizens can only rent out their property if they have acquired a permanent residency permit.
EU citizens
European Union citizens who own property that falls under the superior classification standard by the Malta Tourism Authority are allowed to rent their property irrespective of whether the property has a pool or not. The property should include all basic necessities for the occupant in accordance with Legal Notice 131 of 2002 issued by the Malta Tourism Authority.
Non-EU citizens
Non-European Union citizens can only rent out superior property with a swimming pool.
