Malta’s weather is strongly influenced by the sea. It has a very characteristic Mediterranean flavour typical of that found in southern Italy or southern Greece.

Winters are relatively mild with only rare occurrences of cold weather brought by north and north east winds from central Europe. Daytime winter temperatures almost never fall below 10ºC (50ºF) whilst night time winter temperatures never fall below 0ºC (32ºF). It is usually mild in Malta during the winter, with plenty of sunshine too. Daytime temperatures, on average, are usually 15ºC (59ºF) or above and sometimes also rise to around 20ºC (68ºF).

Summers are warm, dry and very sunny in Malta. The weather usually shows signs of warming up in April and it hardly ever rains from April to August. July and August are Malta's hottest months with daytime temperatures averaging above 30ºC (86ºF). Daytime temperatures in summer are also mitigated by cooling sea breezes, especially along the coast. Since Malta is an island, humidity is rather high during the summer months.

Winds are strong and frequent with the most common being the cool north-westerly (NW) - majjistral, the dry north easterly (NE) - grigal and hot humid south easterly (SE) - xlokk.

The annual rainfall in the Maltese Islands is rather low with an average of 600mm (24 inches). The majority of Malta’s rainfall falls during autumn and winter, mostly from thunderstorms which make up most of the rainfall from September to December. The length of the summer season is longer than in neighbouring Italy with summer temperatures continuing right through till the end of October.
