The Maltese Islands
Diving
The Maltese Islands offer a variety of dive sites, some of the most common and interesting
are wrecks, reefs and caves. There are several diving schools in Malta and Gozo
which provide instruction or accompanied dives, internationally recognised qualifying
courses as well as rental of well-maintained diving equipment.
The islands are full of natural harbours, bays, sheltered creeks, cliffs, reefs
and wrecks. The majority of them are easily accessible either from shore or by boat,
offering top quality dives and a variety of underwater life. For this reason Malta
is considered as a top class diving destination for experienced divers as well as
the perfect place for beginners. The numerous sheltered bays offer shallow and easy
dive conditions suitable for first time divers.
The climate is relatively warm all year round with water temperature reaching a
maximum of 31°C in the hot summer season and an average of 15°C between December
and March.
The sea around the islands is also incredibly clear with most dive spots having
30 meters of visibility and an average water temperature of 20°C. The spectacular
underwater scenery and fauna are another reason why diving in Malta is ideal for
underwater photography.
The government regulates sport diving in Malta and requires all divers to obtain
a local diving permit. In order to apply for the permit one needs the following:
- a C-card issued by the Health Department
- two passport-sized photos
- a recent medical certificate
- a diving logbook/qualification record showing a minimum of CMAS 2 Stars
- an application form
Divers do not need to acquire a C-card if accompanied by a locally qualified instructor.
Such permits are renewable annually and identify the various conditions to be observed
for the safety of participants and the sport in general.
