The Maltese Islands
Eating Out
There are a wide range of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops in Malta and Gozo.
Opening hours are normally between 9.00 a.m. and 1.00 a.m. and beyond. Most hotel
bars close between 13.00 and 16.00 and then re-open till late. The majority of restaurants
are found in the St. Julian’s/Sliema area, where most of the hotels and bars are
situated, however several more can be found around both Malta and Gozo.
In the last decade Malta has seen a strong increase in fine-dining restaurants,
employing award winning chefs. The Maltese cuisine is strongly influenced by the
different countries which governed the islands in the past. Prices range from €6
to €8 per person for a cheap meal to €30 to €50 or more in high-class restaurants.
Meat and fish dishes are highly recommended and one can also try the local, traditional
cuisine such as lampuki (fish), bragoli (meat) and fenek (rabbit). Eating out in
Malta is relatively cheap when compared to other European countries.
There is a large selection of home grown wines, as well as other foreign wines and
spirits available. Maltese beer is another beverage which is extremely popular with
both locals and foreigners.
