The Maltese Islands
Gozo & Comino
Gozo
Gozo provides a tranquil retreat for those looking for peace and quiet. Malta’s
sister island is more rural and greener, blessed with a landscape that is both unique
and picturesque. The island is only 14.5 km long and 8 km wide. Life in Gozo is
quieter then in Malta and many Gozitians earn their livings from fishing and farming.
Besides the beautiful scenery Gozo has much more to offer. There are numerous historical
sites, old fishing villages and open flea markets to visit. The coast is filled
with sandy beaches and rocky inlets. Fresh fish is a speciality served by many good
restaurants, especially those at the fishing ports of Mġarr and Marsalforn. There
are several award-winning restaurants to choose from, many of which provide picturesque
views of the sea and countryside.
For those who are more adventurous, Gozo offers rugged landscape and a spectacular
coastline. Trekking, walking, cycling and rock climbing are all great ways to explore
the Island. The coastline and surrounding waters offer opportunities for sailing,
windsurfing, snorkelling, fishing and diving. Gozo also has a calendar of events
of its own, a healthy night life, a marina, several diving schools, and all other
modern facilities.
The Gozo Ferry service carries passengers and cars between Malta and Gozo. The trip
takes approximately 20 minutes. There is also a sea plan service from the Grand
Harbour in Malta to the port of Mgarr in Gozo. For more information please visit
the
Transport
section.
Property in Gozo
There is a wide choice of farmhouses, apartments and luxury villas for sale, or
for rent in Gozo. One can find several properties which offer amazing panoramic
views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the rural landscape. Gozo is famous for
its wealth of converted farmhouses which boost spacious terraces, gardens and private
pools.
Many Maltese and foreigners own holiday homes in Gozo, whilst others have also decided
to take up permanent residence there.
Comino
The small island of Comino is the perfect place for water sports and swimming. The
main attraction in Comino is the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered inlet where the water
is crystal clear, allowing you to see the white sand below. Comino is frequented
by day trippers in the summer season who enjoy the summer sun and clean, clear blue
sea. During winter many ramblers visit Comino which is ideal for walks and photography.
There is also a hotel on the island which provides water sport facilities.
