The Maltese Islands
Leisure
Since Malta is so small nothing is out of reach. With less time spent travelling
you are able to devote more time to your interests and past times. There are several
different activities one can enjoy, such as sailing, golf, dining-out and shopping.
The following are a list of some of the activities available.
Diving
The waters around the Maltese Islands are clean and clear. Diving is a sport well
practised and there are several diving schools in both Malta and Gozo, which provide
both professional courses and rental equipment. Since the temperature does not get
too cold in winter it is possible to dive during most parts of the winter season.
There are a number of wrecks, caves, reefs and cliff sites waiting to be explored.
Yachting
The Maltese Islands are well equipped with yachting facilities and modern marinas,
with more projects being planned to continue to increase the berthing facilities
around the islands. Malta is located right in the middle of the Mediterranean and
therefore it is an ideal place to berth one’s boat. There are several yachting agents
who provide all the services required to those wishing to base their boats in Malta
during the winter months. The rates are also relatively cheap.
Rambling
Country walks are a perfect way to enjoy the Maltese landscape, especially during
the winter months. Gozo is excellent too for trekking since it is more hilly and
greener then Malta. On both islands you can find majestic cliffs, costal towers
built during the time of the Knights of St John, as well as numerous wayside chapels.
There are various places where one can go camping and there is also a caravan site
in Gharmir Bay, to the North of Malta.

Sports
There are numerous sports facilities and clubs all over the islands including several
gyms, spas, tennis courts, horse racing tracks, and rugby and cricket pitches. Football
is extremely popular with the Maltese and there are several football pitches with
synthetic turf. There are also a number of indoor and outdoor pools. Water polo
is another popular sport which is followed by the Maltese feverishly during the
summer season.
Golf
At present there is one Golf course on the Island however there are plans for the
development of others in the future. The Royal Malta Golf Club is located at the
Marsa Sports club. The golf course consists of 18 holes at par 68. The golf club
has a number of facilities including changing rooms, bar and restaurant, a well
stocked pro shop, practice putting green and a driving range. One can also hire
equipment, whilst beginner courses and lessons are available. The club also offers
Overseas Membership to non-residents of Malta.

Cinema
Since Malta was the backdrop to films such as Gladiator, Troy and Munich it is no
wonder that the cinema is so popular with the Maltese. Cinemas show all major films
in their original English version and the release dates are the same as the rest
of Europe.
